Celebrate Oktoberfest with Beer, Brats, and the Best German Potato Salad Recipe

Get ready to raise your steins and dig into some bratwursts—Oktoberfest is here! This beloved annual tradition, celebrated across nearly every major city in the U.S., brings together beer lovers, food enthusiasts, and fans of lively German music.

Whether attending a local festival or celebrating at home, Oktoberfest is the perfect time to enjoy classic German flavors, including a must-have side dish: warm German potato salad.

Did you know that German potato salad or “Kartoffelsalat” is a classic side dish? The warm potato salad is tossed in a tangy, warm dressing made with vinegar and bacon drippings and can be served at room temperature, warm or hot.

History for one of the Best German Potato Salads

Along with pretzels, strudel and sauerkraut, German immigrants brought their love of vinegar and mustard flavors to American cuisine in the early 1800s. The flavor became so closely linked with them that it became known as the German potato salad.

In honor of the beloved German side, below is the go-to recipe of choice for Picnic People’s Founder, Lisa Richards.
